Processes losing database connection while others don't

We are having something strange happen at a customer's site where we have most if not all processes block on the database for about 10 seconds or so and then 2 or 3 of the processes lose their database connection while all of the others are fine.  What is real strange is this occurred last Monday around 20:45, last Tuesday around 20:04 and then again last night (again Monday) around 20:50 so I'm wondering if there is something occurring within the environment.

This is Sybase 12.0.1 build 4085.

The environment is two VMware instances.  One is Windows 2008 R2 64 bit running the database server and other is Windows 2008 32 bit running our applications.

I am asking their infrastructure team to check any logs they may have to see if anything strange is occuring within the VM cluster.

I also have request logging (SQL+HOSTVARS) turned on but it's not being much help.  One of the real strange things after I figured out one of the database connections that dropped is it looks like not all of the requests are being logged.  If I look in my own log file that is created and printing out the database calls being made, I see many more requests than are being logged by the database; however, the application is working properly up until the connection drops.  The request logs do not show all of the calls.  I'm certain this is the right connection I'm looking at based on the SQL statements being executed so I don't understand the why I'm not seeing all of my requests.
